Digital Nomad Visa in Portugal

The Portuguese government announced the Digital Nomad Visa to allow digital nomads to live and work in Portugal for up to 1 year or apply for residency and stay for a longer period in the country.

Portugal has launched a Digital Nomad Visa that allows foreign workers and independent professionals or entrepreneurs to obtain a visa so they can lawfully carry out their employment duties for a foreign employer or their own foreign-registered business.

Portugal offers two types of Digital Nomad Visas:

  • Temporary Stay Visa allows remote workers to stay in Portugal for up to 1 year and this visa can be renewed. Individuals can freely travel in and out of Portugal.
  • Residence Visa is an excellent option for individuals that are looking to stay in the country for a longer time period. Visa can be renewed up to 5 years and obtaining it this period individuals can start the path toward Portuguese citizenship.

Eligibility

To be eligible for Digital Nomad Visa in Portugal, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • You can offer proof that your income in the last three months prior to your application is €2836 per month.
  • You must also be employed by a company outside of Portugal or self-employed.
  • You can demonstrate that you can work remotely and have no intentions to apply for employment in Portugal.
  • You have a clean criminal record with non-criminal certificate.

Documents Needed to Apply

You can apply for this digital nomad visa at a Portuguese Consulate in your home country or at the Portuguese Immigration and Border Service, also known as SEF. You will need:

  • Identification documents: a valid passport with at least six months remaining before expiration and two recent photographs.
  • Proof of income to support yourself during your stay in Portugal: employment contract or partnership agreement.
  • Proof of accommodation: to prove financial means, the applicant will also need to show that he has accommodation in the country.
  • Evidence of health insurance of €30 000 during your complete stay.
  • Criminal record: the Portuguese Foreigners and Borders Service has a special permission to search your criminal history in your native country.
