The European Patent Office (EPO) manages the EU’s patent system, offering a robust framework to protect intellectual property rights.

Applying for a Patent:

To obtain a patent in the EU, applicants file a single application with the EPO. This application undergoes a meticulous examination to ensure it meets the criteria outlined in the European Patent Convention. The examination involves conducting a thorough search for existing knowledge (prior art) and assessing the invention’s uniqueness, innovation, and practical application.

Duration of a Patent:

A European patent remains valid for 20 years from the date of application, contingent upon the payment of annual renewal fees.

The following fundamental papers must be included:

• A request for a European patent
• A description of the invention

• Patent claims
• Abstract of the invention’s subject matter in English, French, and German
• Drawings (if applicable)
